Iowa Pathways Eligibility Criteria
Prospective students interested in participating in this federally-funded grant program will need to meet two levels of eligibility requirements – proof of limited English proficiency (LEP) and proof of academic preparation.
Step
One – Eligibility Criteria
Prospective students will need to meet each of the following requirements to successfully be considered for Level Two consideration:
1. Applicant must be 18 years old or older;
2. Students currently enrolled in high school must complete high school
prior to applying;
3. Applicant must demonstrate primary language skills in a language
other than English;
4. Applicant must be foreign born and furnish proof of immigrant status
that demonstrates work eligibility in the United States (legal right to
work and study);
5. Applicant must demonstrate competency in English and mathematics;
Students who achieve these five criteria are eligible for federal grant
funding and may apply for academic consideration to Mercy College of
Health Sciences.
Step Two – Academic Preparation Eligibility Criteria
Prospective students who meet Step One eligibility criteria will then
be given an opportunity to select one of seven academic program areas of
study offered by Mercy College of Health Sciences under this grant
program. Admissions requirements are unique to each academic program
based on a number of factors including medical and criminal history.
Short-term Certificate Offerings
Short-term certificate programs are one semester academic offerings (15 weeks to complete course content) that prepare students for a national licensure examination in the specific field of study. Short-term certificate offerings are:
- Medical Billing and Coding
- Emergency Medical Technician-Basic
- Nursing Assistant
- Medication Aide (New in Fall
2011)
Academic Certificate Offerings
Academic certificate programs are traditionally one year programs that will be offered to a single cohort of LEP students under this grant, taught over five to seven academic semesters (maximum of 2+ years) to help increase understanding of course content prior to testing for a national licensure examination in the specific field of study.
