What does a certified nursing assistant do?
As a certified nursing assistant (CNA), you will be equipped to work in a variety of health care settings, including a hospital, skilled nursing facility, long-term care, hospice or home care setting. If after the course you successfully complete the State of Iowa certification exam, you will be placed on the State Registry, which is required for working in Iowa as a CNA.

Education Requirements

  • Submit an official copy of high school or college transcript with a GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale or GED composite score of 500 or higher; or
  • ACT composite of 18 or higher; or
  • Show proof of having taken within the last two years the reading section of the COMPASS test and achieve a scaled reading score of 65 or higher.

Background Check and Medical Forms

  • Completed Background Check forms (Iowa Health Care Facility (135) Record Check, Request for Child Abuse Information and Request for Dependent Adult Abuse Registry Information)
  • NA/Nursing Clinical Standards signed by BOTH applicant and appropriate healthcare provider within the last 12 months.
  • Medical History/Health Update signed by the applicant.
  • Medical Examination/Physical completed and signed by an appropriate healthcare provider within the last 12 months.
  • Completed Required Immunizations signed by an appropriate healthcare provider. 1) Complete and submit documentation of a two-step tuberculin skin test screening. Full TB process must have been completed within 1 year. 2) Official documentation showing student has received or is currently in the process of receiving the 3-dose Hepatitis B series vaccine series. 3) MMR (2 doses), Chicken Pox immunity and current Tetanus booster. The College may, at it’s discretion, also require proof of seasonal flu vaccination prior to participation in courses that include a clinical rotation.

Length of Program

The NA program is held over the course of 15 weeks.

Course Content

The 150-Hour program is designed for individuals seeking employment as a nursing assistant in a variety of health care settings, including a hospital, skilled nursing facility, long-term care, hospice, or home care setting. Upon successful completion the student is qualified to take the state written and skills competency test. This program is approved for six hours of college credit. Students seeking to receive college credit must pay the regular part-time tuition rate.

Clinical Training

Students will receive a total of 60 hours of clinical experience; 30 hours are spent in a skilled or long-term care setting, and 30 hours are spent in a hospital setting.

Expected Income Level

In Des Moines, Iowa, the pay rate for a certified nursing assistant varies from $10 to $11 per hour ($20,800 to $22,880 annually).
